Today, across high-performing engineering organizations, the workflow has shifted to “80% agent coding.” But this shift has revealed two deeper truths — one professional, and one economic — that are uncomfortable for many in the profession.
The bottleneck is no longer how to build something.
The bottleneck has split into two distinct risks:
- Discernment: Knowing exactly what to build when implementation is near-instant.
- Sovereignty: Surviving the economics of building it when the “loss-leader” phase of AI ends.

The junior developer of 2026 uses AI to generate massive, sprawling PRs that “work” but are impossible to maintain. They don’t ask, “How fast can I generate this?” They ask, “What is the minimum amount of code required to solve this business problem?”
